Student Seminar Series

Presentation skills are essential for effective communication and success in science. All of us have attended conferences and listened to talks by other scientists. Sometimes speakers excite their audience. Occasionally, the speaker may be so dull or ill prepared that the listeners fail to follow. Most of us fall somewhere in between. The student seminar series is aimed at helping students develop skills in addressing live audiences and to encourage participation as an audience member.

The aims of the seminar/workshops are:

WHEN, WHERE and HOW?

Student presentations in the series will be held at 4pm every second Friday in the Westpac Auditorium, E floor of the Bancroft Centre.
Dr Malcolm Jones co-ordinates either one or two speakers each session and introduces each speaker.
Students, supervisors and staff gather prior to the lectures for social drinks and nibbles at 3.30pm outside the auditorium.

Each of the student presentations should be approximately 20 min duration allowing at least 10 min for discussion. The presentation should include This may be either a slide or computer based presentation. If you require assistance, or wish to make a booking contact Matthew Dixon.

Each presentation will be individually evaluated by 3 or more individuals (both supervisors of the student and your QIMR HDC reviewer) and the student presenter will receive both oral (during discussion at the end of the seminar) and written feedback on their presentation using a standard seminar evaluation form.

Students themselves will be encouraged to participate in the discussion session.
These seminars will take place in the Westpac Auditorium so that every student gains experience in the use of the speaker podium.

A seminar date will be suggested to every student, starting with the more advanced students first.
Students requiring to give a public seminar as part of the requirements for their confirmation review, may use this lecture as part of their assessment.
Both the students supervisors, their HDC reviewer, an independent expert in the field will need to be present at this seminar.
If the date is not suitable it may be exchanged to another date by contacting Matthew Dixon.

Students greatly benefit from positive feedback.
