Student Society
Over recent years, members of the student body have organised an informal but dedicated student committee, whose primary focus is encouraging a cohesive student body through a combination of social and educational events. At the end of 2003, with over 150 students in two buildings of QIMR a Student Society was formed and a committee elected. The 2008 Committee comprises:
| President | Thanh Tran Clinical Tropical Medicine Laboratory Phone: 3845 3507 Thanh.Tran@qimr.edu.au |
| Secretary | Julie Johnson Genetics and Population Health Laboratory Phone: 3362 0366 Julie.Johnson@qimr.edu.au |
| Treasurer | Brian Morrison Dendritic Cells and Cancer Laboratory Phone: 3845 3801 Brian.Morrison@qimr.edu.au |
QIMRSS' 2007: What is it all about?
The Student Society at QIMR was founded as a platform for the students to have interaction with each other through various activities and forums. The kick off event of 2007 was an Easter BBQ in early April for all the students and the other members. It was a great afternoon with oodles of food, raffles (prizes donated by GE Healthcare and Invitrogen) and the world championships of egg and spoon racing (pictures below).
The 'big-bang' event of last year was the Third Biennial QIMR Postgraduate Student Conference held at Noosa Northshore Resort from the 6-7th of September. The Retreat was a very rainy two day event that provided students with an opportunity to get to know one another and to present their work in an unimposing environment and develop their leadership and teamwork skills. On the whole it was a lot of fun and we even managed to uncover a few hidden singing talents!
The final event for 2007 was the Student Society Christmas party, for which we held a BBQ followed by a little light hearted competition during Putt Putt at the Victoria Park Golf course.
We are grateful to several companies (Australian Animal Care Systems, Applied Biosystems, DKSH, Promega, and Q-Pharm) who provided major sponsorship for last year's conference and those who have continually provided support for activities to make research more 'fun' (Invitrogen and Pall Life Sciences).
We would also like to thank the students for their ongoing support and encourage
you all to get involved, because without you none of this would be possible.
Finally special thanks go to Julie, Thanh and Brian who have taken over the Student Society Committee for 2008.
We hope you have a great year!

2006: What's been and what's to come
This year there are over 100 post-graduate students in both the Bancroft and CBCRC buildings at QIMR, and a majority of these students are members of the QIMR Student Society.
The year started with the 'Greet the Meat BBQ' for all students and members to attend. It was a great arvo with good food, volleyball, raffles and who could forget the adult jumping castle?
In April the QIMR Student Race Day was held at Eagle Farm Racecourse. Eighty people attended and I dare say everyone had fun! (see the pics)
In the coming months, three workshops are planned for the students:
- Science Communication - In light of the recently introduced guidelines by the NHMRC
- Stress/Time Management - A registered psychologist speaking about 'keeping your head above water' while studying in research
- Statistical Inference - Question and answer time with a Biostatistician
The aim of the Student Society is simply to provide opportunities for all QIMR
students to get to know one another and enjoy themselves while taking advantage
of a few career development opportunities. With voluntary student unionism commencing
this year, the society is heavily dependant on sponsorship and we have been fortunate
to receive continued support from Invitrogen and PALL Life Sciences.
As well there has been fundraising support throughout QIMR of the tea room chocolates,
organized by Mic Smout, and the numerous student society raffles.
Lastly, we would like to thank all the students for their support and appreciate any input from you all. So please just let us know what you can/ would like to do!
