Clinical Sciences
Infectious diseases, cancer and hereditary disorders account for
much of human suffering and mortality. Research is essential to improve
disease outcome and patient health. QIMR scientists are working on novel
and strategic technologies required for this. The Institute fosters an
integrated approach to biomedical research with programs extending from
the basic laboratory bench to clinical applications, through to the
development of new products for biopharmaceutical industries. A strong
epidemiology program provides an underlying theme throughout. These
research efforts are greatly assisted by cooperation and collaboration
between researchers and clinicians, other institutes, support foundations,
hospitals, health areas and Universities.
A new and exciting area of clinical research is the development of
approaches to facilitate stimulation of the patient’s own immune system
to recognise and combat cancer and other diseases. Major research programs
