The QIMR/RBWH Statistics Unit provides firstly, statistical consultancy and secondly, collaboration on research for scientists and clinicians at Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) across the Herston campus. The Unit of a senior biostatistician and three biostatisticians has Queensland Government core and Private Practice Trust Fund financial support from QIMR and RBWH, respectively. It also has financial support from research grants where co-operative work is carried out with QIMR scientists.
The Statistics Unit has contributed to medical and public health research productivity in 2012 through statistical consultancy and research collaboration via:
- an author on 43 peer reviewed publications, 32 (74%) of them in moderate to high impact journals in 2012;
- an investigator on 13 current research grants, including two new ones in 2012;
- established a joint translational research initiative with the Population Epidemiology Unit of Queensland Department of Health to enhance the population health of Queenslanders through complex statistical analysis of risk factors for improved health status;
- provided a training program on statistical themes (making friends with statistics) of six seminars and accompanying workshops for scientists and clinicians at QIMR and RBWH;
- participated in higher degree and professional development for the biostatisticians on statistical themes, particularly statistical genetics and complex modelling;
- contributed methodological expertise to collaborative projects through development and use of advanced statistical methods, particularly normalisation and analysis for genetic studies, longitudinal data analysis with missing information and modelling of parasitaemia growth curves for malaria;
- provided statistical expertise as members of ethics and external research committees and as reviewers for granting bodies and journal editors.
Since May 2006 the Unit has provided statistical support to 81% of the 88 laboratories and Units at QIMR and RBWH. In 2012 the Unit has consulted with 63% of them and had substantial collaboration with the research of 47%. The client base has largely stabilised since 2011 with increased intensity of activity for these established groups.
