Migraine

Migraine is a common and distressing disorder which causes severe headaches. It can be distinguished from regular headaches by a combination of symptoms including throbbing, aura, one-sidedness, nausea, vomiting, light and/or noise sensitivity. Migraine headaches can last anywhere between 4 and 72 hours.

Studies have shown the incidence of migraine to be 9-10 percent, with about 17 percent of the female population and 6 percent of the male population affected. This suggests that approximately 2 million Australians can be expected to suffer from migraine – some 1.5 million women and 500,000 men.

Our research focuses on:

  • Identifying the genes responsible for causing migraine
  • Investigating genetic links between migraine and endometriosis, depression, anxiety, stroke, irritable bowel syndrome, epilepsy and hypertension
