Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a severe, lifelong mental disorder. A person with schizophrenia typically experiences changes in behaviour and perception, and disordered thinking that can distort their sense of reality. This is referred to as psychosis and can include hallucinations and delusions such as hearing voices.

Schizophrenia is often mistakenly referred to as a 'split personality'. This is not true; people with schizophrenia may have delusions and a distorted sense of reality, but they do not have multiple personalities (Source: SANE Australia).

Our recent research has found:

  • Schizophrenia is caused by thousands of genetic variations, which are also linked to bipolar disorder. This research appears to support the theory that mental illnesses may form a continuum, rather than discrete conditions.
